Matt Pooley is a UK-based landscape artist whose work is deeply inspired by the natural drama and beauty of the British countryside. Originally from Plymouth, Devon, he studied 3D Design in Preston before settling in Meltham, West Yorkshire in 2005. Living on the edge of and regularly commuting through the Peak District has provided him with daily exposure to moorlands, valleys, and ancient woodland—landscapes that have become central themes in his painting
He works primarily in acrylic, oil, watercolour and fine-line ink, producing expressive, atmospheric pieces that explore the shifting moods of weather, light, and season. His practice often begins with walking and photographing remote locations—capturing the exact moment when light breaks through cloud or mist rolls in across the hills. These fleeting, cinematic qualities are central to his style, which balances bold mark-making with delicate detail.
Rooted in observation but interpreted with freedom, his paintings evoke a strong emotional sense of place. The rugged character of the land—particularly the untamed beauty of the Yorkshire moors and The Lake District—is rendered through dynamic compositions, rich tonal contrasts, and an intuitive use of colour.
Matt’s work is available as original paintings and in limited-edition giclée prints, each signed and numbered. His art has been exhibited in regional galleries and selected for curated events such as Saltaire Arts Trail. Open to commissions, he continues to develop new work that responds to the changing landscape around him, celebrating the raw, often solitary beauty of the British outdoors.
